Airplane Crash Sites Peak District
Below is a map showing the distribution of aircraft accidents that occurred around the peak district, the national park is outlined in dark grey. On 3 november 1948, a us air force plane on a routine flight crashed in thick cloud. Outside of the peak district only crash sites which one or all of us have visited are recorded whereas in our home area we have tried to record all of the known incidents involving powered aircraft. The aircraft crashed into round hill on bleaklow in the peak district in bad weather , nothing wrong could be found with the aircraft and it is assumed that the pilot was trying to fly between the cloud and hillside when he crashed. The evidence is still there, if you know where to look.
There's about 110 crash sites (50 or so with remaining identifiable wreckage) in the peaks with possibly the biggest and most obvious just near the point at which the pennine way crosses snake pass, close to higher shelf stones, where a halifax bomber crashed on a payroll run. But the empty expanses of kinder scout and bleaklow hold a darker secret that i knew little about. All 13 crewmembers on board were killed.
